What Are the Six Kalmas?

The Six Kalmas are six short Islamic declarations and supplications that express the core beliefs of a Muslim. They affirm the oneness of Allah and the prophethood of Muhammad (peace be upon him), glorify Allah, seek His forgiveness, and renew one’s commitment to faith.

At Al Hafeez Online Quran Academy, our qualified teachers help kids, adults, and new Muslims learn each kalma with correct pronunciation and a clear understanding of its meaning — through live, one-on-one online classes.

First Kalma
Kalma Tayyab

The declaration of faith — there is no deity worthy of worship except Allah, and Muhammad is His Messenger.

Source: Mentioned in Sahih Muslim as the central tenet of Islam.

2

Second Kalma
Kalma Shahadat

The testimony of faith, bearing witness to the oneness of Allah and the messengership of Muhammad (peace be upon him).

Source: Found in Sahih Muslim regarding ablution (wudu) and faith.

3

Third Kalma
Kalma Tamjeed

Beautiful words glorifying Allah and declaring His perfection, majesty, and freedom from all flaws.

Source: Associated with abundant rewards mentioned in Sahih al-Bukhari and Sahih Muslim.

4

Fourth Kalma
Kalma Tauheed

Affirming the absolute oneness of Allah — without any partners, equals, or associates.

Source: Recorded in Tirmidhi and Nasai for remembrance and seeking immense blessings.

5

Fifth Kalma
Kalma Astaghfar

A heartfelt supplication seeking Allah’s forgiveness for sins, past and future, hidden and open.

6

Sixth Kalma
Kalma Radd-e-Kufr
